St. Nicholas happened to be wandering through the town where the man lived and heard villagers discussing that familyā€™s plight.

He wanted to help but knew the man would refuse accepting any kind of charity. So instead, he slid down the chimney of the familyā€™s house during the night. Then he spied the girlsā€™ freshly laundered stockings drying by the fire. He filled the stockings with gold coins and then he disappeared. The girls awoke in the morning, overjoyed upon discovering the bounty. Because of St. Nicholasā€™ generosity, the father and his daughters could find peace knowing that his daughters would be able to marry.
