The Holiday Stocking Tradition Goes Way Back
As you shop these Witchy Stocking Stuffers you may wonder where the tradition of stockings comes from. If you celebrate Christmas, you're probably heard “A Visit From Saint Nicholas”. "The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.” But did you ever stop to think why we hang socks by the chimney for Santa?
The Legend of St. Nicholas
This tradition goes back to the legend of St. Nicholas. In one of the versions of his story, a recently widowed father of three girls was having a tough time making ends meet. Even though his daughters were beautiful, he worried that their poverty would make it impossible for them to marry. St. Nicholas happened to be wandering through the town where the man lived and heard villagers discussing that family’s plight.
He wanted to help but knew the man would refuse accepting any kind of charity. So instead, he slid down the chimney of the family’s house during the night. Then he spied the girls’ freshly laundered stockings drying by the fire. He filled the stockings with gold coins and then he disappeared. The girls awoke in the morning, overjoyed upon discovering the bounty. Because of St. Nicholas’ generosity, the father and his daughters could find peace knowing that his daughters would be able to marry.
